This weekend Chapin/Newberry Post 193/24 will host five teams from both Carolinas in the 13th Annual NC-SC Challenge American Legion Baseball tournament.
In addition to Post 193/24, Florence and Sumter will represent South Carolina, while Rowan County, Randolph County and Shelby will represent North Carolina. This year’s event kicks-off Friday at the Newberry College Smith Road Sports Complex when Florence takes on Rowan County at 5 pm, and then Chapin/Newberry plays Rowan County in the nightcap at 7:30 pm.
Games start-up again Saturday morning at 11 when Rowan County plays its final game of the tournament against Sumter, followed at 1:30 pm by the Florence versus Shelby game. Florence then plays its final tournament matchup at 4 o’clock against Randolph County, and then Chapin/Newberry is on the field again in the 6:30 pm nightcap.
Three games complete the Challenge on Sunday: Sumter versus Randolph County at noon, Sumter versus Shelby at 2:30 pm, and finally, Chapin/Newberry versus Shelby in the tournament finale at 5 pm.
The state with the most combined team victories wins the Challenge.
Post 193/24 has played two games this week leading up to the weekend Challenge tournament. Chapin/Newberry (CN) took a 2-1 loss in Monday’s game at Lancaster when the matchup ended after four-and-a-half innings because of rain. But back at home on Tuesday CN shut-out Lancaster 9-0 to stand at 3-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Chapin/Newberry is competing in League V this year along with Fort Mill, Lancaster and Rock Hill. Post 193/24 is currently at No. 3 in the league, with Fort Mill at No. 1, followed by Rock Hill, and ahead of Lancaster at No. 4.
After the weekend tournament, CN will start next week playing host to Fort Mill on Tuesday and follow that with a home game against Lancaster on Thursday, and then go on the road to play Lancaster again on Friday at Lancaster.
