Irmo and Dutch Fork basketball teams will take a brief break from region competition this week to play the first of two District Five games between them, with this one set to happen at the Dutch Fork Fox Den.
Irmo, a Region 4-5A competitor, will visit Dutch Fork, of Region 5-5A, on Friday, with the varsity girls tipping-off at 6 pm, and the boys getting started at 7:30 pm.
The Lady Yellow Jackets improved to 1-2 in region play and 10-8 overall with their 48-25 conference win against Lugoff-Elgin early this week, adding the first region victory to the record after last week’s losses to No. 2 Spring Valley (77-46) and Blythewood (50-45).
The Lady Silver Foxes (9-5, 3-0) remained perfect in region play after their 57-17 win over River Bluff late last week and their close 53-50 victory against Lexington early this week. Dutch Fork began region competition with the 59-21 win against Chapin early last week. Before this week’s close win against the Wildcats, the Lexington varsity girls were at No. 8 in the January 8 Top-10 South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association (SCBCA) poll.
Dutch Fork was not among those teams making the Top-10 in last week’s poll, nor was Irmo.
Irmo’s varsity boys got two straight wins in region play over the past week to improve to 11-7, 2-1 as they head into the non-conference game at Dutch Fork on Friday. Following the Region 4-5A region opener loss to Spring Valley early last week, the Yellow Jackets turned things around with the 46-45 thriller over Blythewood last Friday and the 55-31 win against Lugoff-Elgin early this week.
Dutch Fork’s varsity boys (10-6, 1-2) took two Region 5-5A losses over the past week to follow the win against Chapin in last week’s region opener. The Silver Foxes lost a close one 62-60 at River Bluff last Friday, and then lost 60-55 at Lexington on Tuesday, this week.
In the January 8 SCBCA poll, the Blythewood boys were No. 4, Lexington was No. 5 and River Bluff was at No. 6. Neither Irmo nor Dutch Fork were included in that Top-10 poll.
After Friday’s non-region District Five rival game at Dutch Fork, these two will meet again on the court when the Silver Foxes visit Irmo on February 5, a Tuesday.
