The Optimist Club of St. Andrews-Irmo’s December 7 speaker was Jennifer Fuge, Senior Services Meals Manager at Irmo-Chapin Recreation Commission (ICRC).

Fuge described ICRC’s role in the local Meals on Wheels program, the home bases of which are located at Seven Oaks Park and Crooked Creek Park. The program serves adults aged 60 and older who are homebound, live alone, or are unable to prepare their own meals.

The meals are delivered each weekday by volunteers who travel routes that serve 9 to 12 homes per route. Currently the program helps about 50 people per day.  The meals are managed by a dietician, who can adapt to special dietary needs. Fuge identified a need for insulated bags to help maintain temperature during the running of meal routes.

Another aspect of ICRC’s offerings is the loaning of wheelchairs, walkers, and shower chairs that are furnished with no time limitations. These items are donated by individuals.
