Irmo will get a new Starbucks coffee shop, but it’s going to take a while.

Workers have taken down an old building, once the location of the Greater Irmo Chamber of Commerce on Lake Murray Boulevard. A new building is planned for the site, which will house the Starbucks, and provide space for another retailer that has not yet been named, but is likely to be a restaurant.

But the current construction is being monitored by DHEC, according to Irmo Town Administrator Bob Brown. Since the former location was once occupied by a laundry service that could have left pollutants in the ground, DHEC is conducting inspections to make sure it will be a safe environment.

Brown said the project is likely to be completed in a few months.

It won’t be the only new coffee shop in Irmo. Loveland Coffee, the specialty-grade coffee roaster, plans to locate a roasting facility and coffee shop in a building at 7475 Carlisle St. now occupied by the CrossFit gym. Besides the roasting facility, the site will house a kitchen and a bar.

On its web page, Loveland cited a long-term desire to locate in Irmo.

“It has been our heart’s desire for over the past 10 years to have a brick and mortar storefront coffee location. We have prayerfully waited for the right location and are happy to announce we bought an amazing building in the center of Irmo and will be opening a cafe in the summer of 2020.”

CrossFit gym will continue to lease the space while it searches for a new location.

There’s also a rumor that a new hotel may be coming to Irmo.

Irmo Mayor Barry Walker Sr. confirmed that a hotel is considering an Irmo site, but said it’s too early to know any details or reveal its planned location. He acknowledged that discussions are underway.

The Stars and Strikes Family Entertainment Center’s move to the old Piggly Wiggly site on Lake Murray Boulevard is expected to take place later this year. It’s described as a “get away and play” complex.

The site is expected to have a restaurant, bowling alley, bumper cars and an arcade. It will be the’ second location for the South Carolina franchise. The other is located in Summerville.
