Sports Destination Management, the leading publication with the largest circulation of sports event planners and tournament directors in the sports tourism market, has announced the 2018 Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism. This year’s winners are responsible for contributing more than $700 million to the national economy over the past year.
Among the winners was the Capital City/Lake Murray Country Regional Tourism Board for hosting the 2017 Forest Wood Cup.
The Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing, returned to Lake Murray Country August 11-13, 2017, crowning bass fishing’s top angler of 2017. Hosted by the Capital City Lake Murray Country Regional Tourism Board, the tournament featured 53 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals casting for the sport’s biggest award, $300,000 cash. Five facilities were occupied for the three-day event, 15,681 room nights were booked and total attendance was 68,315 fishing fans.
Television coverage of the 2017 Forrest Wood Cup premiered in high-definition (HD) on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN). The Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show aired on NBCSN, the Pursuit Channel and the World Fishing Network and is broadcast to more than 564 million households worldwide, making it the most widely distributed weekly outdoors-sports television show in the world. The total economic impact for the 2017 Forest Wood Cup was 30+ million.
