James (Jim) Whitfield Johnson, 95, formerly of Beaufort, SC, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2018. Born in Rock Hill, SC, he was the son of the late Emma Jane Seymore Johnson and the Reverend Whitfield Franklin Johnson. Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Army during World War II and in the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and taught school at Batesburg-Leesville High School, Beaufort High School, and Battery Creek High School in Beaufort, SC.
Mr. Johnson often had lunch at the Lizard’s Thicket Restaurant in Irmo and would provide them with small stand mounted American flags that could be placed on the tables. Every Fourth of July and Veteran’s Day, Lizard’s Thicket would decorate the tables with his flags.
Mr. Johnson is survived by a daughter, Sandra J. Calore and husband, John; grandson, Jonathan W. Calore and wife Haley; along with great-granddaughters, Caroline J. and Madison W. Calore, all of Columbia. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 67 years, Louise P. Johnson; two sisters, Clara J. Langley, and Delma J. Johnson; brother, Reverend Elbert L. Johnson and a number of nieces and nephews.
A service of celebration of Mr. Johnson’s life was held at 2pm on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, followed by interment in Bush River Memorial Gardens. A visitation was held prior to the service from 1 until 2pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Ashland United Methodist Church, 2600 Ashland Road, Columbia, SC 29210.
