With Irmo’s varsity teams back into the swing of the schedule after the recent holiday break, they are now fully engaged in the all-important region games with weeks to go before the season wraps up.

BASKETBALL

Irmo’s girls basketball team evened its Region 5-5A record at 2-2 late last week with the 61-26 home game loss to Spring Valley four matchups into the 12-game conference schedule. All but one of Irmo’s remaining games on the regular schedule will be region contests.

Having already recorded region wins against Blythewood and Lexington and losses to White Knoll and Spring Valley, the Lady Yellow Jackets (8-6, 2-2) — with only one game on the agenda this week — look to Friday’s road game at River Bluff. The Lady Gators — 0-5 in the region and 4-8 overall — took a 100-27 loss to Spring Valley early this week and should be looking to reset their win/loss profile when the Lady YJ’s visit on Friday at 6 pm.

The Irmo boys varsity team also endured a home game loss to the Vikings last week, 82-62, and now stand at 2-2 in region competition and 10-4 overall as they prepare for their only matchup this week; at River Bluff at 7:30 pm on Friday.

The Gators (14-3, 3-2) took a close 55-54 loss to Spring Valley early this week and should present a challenge to the Yellow Jackets when they visit River Bluff at the end of the week.

WRESTLING

Irmo’s wrestlers finished last week’s Blue Devil Invitational Tournament at Dreher High School at No. 10 out of the 27-team field, and they are at No. 20 in this week’s Top-20, 5A team rankings published by scmat.com. The Yellow Jackets were No. 17 in the December 19 rankings and were not included in the October preseason ranks.

Three Irmo wrestlers also earned places among the Top-8 rankings of individuals by weight class. Jordan Reed is No. 8 at 126 pounds, Timmy Land is No. 5 at 170 pounds, and Sam Sherer is No. 7 at 285 pounds.

To follow last week’s Blue Devil tournament, Irmo was to compete in a region tri-meet at midweek, this week, and then do it again Wednesday, next week, which is the wrestlers senior day meet.
