The three-member team of Audrey Keller, William Ostergaard and Anna White finished first place in South Carolina in the Fall Stock Market Game, sponsored by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA).
The Stock Market Game is offered in South Carolina through SC Economics at the Darla Moore School of Business. The game gives students the chance to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in an on-line portfolio. The Irmo High team had the highest percentage return above the S&P 500 at 16.23 percent for a total equity of $112,307.18. There were 524 other teams in the contest. The second place team had a return of 14.74 percent, while the third place team had a return of 13.35 percent.
The Irmo High School team is led by teachers Joe Cunningham and Sarah Ostergaard.
“What an impressive showing to place first out of over 500 teams in the state,” said Irmo High School Principal Dr. Robin Hardy. “I truly am grateful for Mr. Cunningham and Mrs. Ostergaard’s leadership in allowing our extraordinary students to excel in such real-world experiences.”
Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, the SIFMA Foundation administers The Stock Market Game nationally with the involvement of 15,000 teachers, 12,000 schools and 600,000 students annually in all 50 states. The program, an educational tool, has reached 17 million students since its inception and continues to evolve as a real-world, hands-on experience reflecting the changing capital marketplace, financial tools and demands for financial capability.
The winning students will be honored May 10, 2019 during The Darla Moore School of Business’s annual Awards Day lunch.
