Irmo varsity soccer teams have started the 2016-17 season with preseason tournaments, the regular season kickoff and wins and losses already recorded.

The Irmo girls went 1-2 in the Viking Cup at Spring Valley with a 2-1 loss to A. C. Flora in Round One, a 3-0 shutout over South Aiken in Round Two, and a 3-0 loss to Clover in the third round.

Then the Lady Yellow Jackets went on to open the regular season last week with three consecutive Region 5-5A games. They earned a 2-0 shutout against Dutch Fork in the regular season opener, followed that with a 1-0 loss to Blythewood to complete Week One in their first home game, and then took a 2-1 loss to Lexington on Tuesday to start this week.

Now the Irmo girls look to the next game to continue their region competition early in the season. They will play at White Knoll on Friday at 7 pm, and then open next week’s games with yet another region contest when they visit Spring Valley on Tuesday, also with a 7 pm game time.

Then, after only their second home game of the season on Friday, next week, when Eastside visits for a non-conference game, the Yellow Jackets will complete the first of two rounds of region games when they play host to River Bluff on Tuesday, March 21.

The second half of the season looks very much the same; all region games except for the non-conference — but district rival — game at Chapin on April 19.

And the Irmo boys — pretty much the same thing. The Yellow Jackets have only two non-conference games on the regular season agenda: at home against Airport on Thursday, next week, and at home again on April 17 against A. C. Flora.

The truth is, it would be very difficult not to play a loaded region schedule when your huge region includes seven teams — unless, of course, one would want to extend the school year a few weeks to work in a few non-region games.

The Irmo boys also started with a preseason tournament: The second annual Capital City Cup, where they went 1-2 with a 5-0 loss to Buford in the opener, followed by a 4-1 win against Hammond, and then a 3-0 loss to Mauldin to wrap up their run in the tournament.

Irmo then opened the regular season with a 2-1 win at Blythewood last week, then took a 1-0 loss against Lexington in their first regular season home game earlier this week. Now the Yellow Jackets look to their second home game when the Timberwolves of White Knoll visit on Friday at 7:15 pm, and follow that with another home game when Spring Valley’s Vikings visit Tuesday, next week, also at 7:15 pm.

The 2017 high school soccer season is up-and-running at full throttle.
