A surprise announcement that left council members smiling was made at Tuesday’s Irmo Council meeting.

The Irmo Police Department has received a $50,000 check from local businessman Robert Brandi, who operated several gas stations in the Irmo area until he recently sold them.

Police Chief Don Perry said he has met Brandi in the past but had no prior knowledge that the check was coming until the announcement was made at the Irmo Council meeting.

“It was a surprise,” he said.

In the letter received by the town, Brandi asked the police department use the money for safety equipment and canine needs.

Perry said the town doesn’t currently have any canine service dogs but he would make sure the money is well spent, possibly on improved communications activities with the community.

Mayor Hardy King also said he has met Brandi in the past and was familiar with his business operations in the Irmo area. He was also surprised to receive the check.

Brandi is a graduate of Irmo High School.

Since 1974 the Brandi Companies have operated 34 convenience stores and 18 Burger King restaurants in the Midlands.

In the past, Brandi has been involved in raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Leukemia Society, the American Diabetes Association, the Children’s Miracle Network, and various other charities. He lives on Lake Murray.
