After competing in preseason holiday tournaments over the Thanksgiving break, both of Irmo’s varsity basketball teams got the regular season off to a good start this week.
The girls played in the A. C. Flora Lady Falcon Classic last week and came away from it 1-2 before kicking off the season early this week with a 57-22 win at River Bluff.
At the A. C. Flora Classic it was Ridge View over the Lady Yellow Jackets 54-45 in the opener, but then the Jackets bounced back in Game Two to win it 49-22 over Richland Northeast. The final game was close, but Airport won it 46-44 over Irmo.
Then the Lady Jackets went over to River Bluff Tuesday and evened the record at 2-2 when they defeated the Lady Gators 57-22, with another non-conference Lexington County rival contest coming up Friday when Irmo goes on the road to take on Lexington in a 6 pm varsity girls game.
Irmo’s varsity boys went north to Spartanburg to compete in the preseason Impact Sports Invitational tournament again this year, and they came away from it at 2-1 again this year. In the Yellow Jackets’ tournament opener they defeated Mauldin 46-39, and then lost a close second round 52-50 to Shannon Forest Christian School before coming back in the next contest to dominate the action against Laurens District 55 High School.
It was Irmo 65, Laurens 43 to settle the Yellow Jackets at third place for the tournament.
Then the Jackets opened the regular season games early this week with a 48-43 road win at River Bluff to stand at 3-1, and they are going across the Lake Murray dam again Friday to take on traditional rival Lexington at 7:30 pm, just after the girls game is completed.
The Irmo boys will follow Friday’s game with another road trip on Saturday when they are to take on The Miller School of Albemarle at Nation Ford, in Fort Mill. Both varsity teams will play their first home games on Tuesday when Newberry visits Irmo for the first of two back-to-back games versus the Bulldogs.
