Wow! It’s exciting to have the best golfer on earth from our community.
That’s right, with his win at the Genesis Open PGA tour victory, Dustin Johnson, from Chapin, is now ranked number one in the world.
Pretty special stuff and considering Johnson took over this position while my son Wesley was pursuing him in the event was quite a bonus. Now Wesley did not press on him, he was just listed under him on the scoreboard and the analyst did bring out the fact that both attended Dutch Fork High School. What they didn’t mention was they both played for the greatest golf team coach that I have ever known, Mark Giles.
Wesley is in his first season and Dustin was the PGA Tour’s best last year, this is really not a comparison but both players have some things I think are important in common. One is that they both play fast and play without thinking a lot. They are magical at keeping things simple. Speaking of magic, DJ hits it magically straight and long. This combination is unprecedented. He also is magically relentless in adversity and with the lead. In fact, I think the world of golf is getting ready for quite a show. Wesley has a magic wedge and putter. Wesley also loves leading and the scent of contention.
In my opinion, what both players share is they keep golf a game. That is really uncommon too, especially among the culture of sport and professional entertainment. That’s right. Both play golf for fun, and the game does not define them. It’s what they do, but not who they are.
I so wish the juniors and college players and parents could know, understand and believe this.
Speaking of junior golf, both Dustin and Wesley got their competitive golf start in the Tri-County Chapter of the South Carolina Junior Golf Association which at the time was run by Buddy Bostian. Bostian is still the head pro at the Ponderosa Club in Leesville, and there is not a softer, more encouraging heart in golf.
Both Buddy Bostian and Mark Giles have some Dustin and Wesley stories that I will be pursuing in the near future for light entertainment. So stay tuned.
