The winners of the Liberty Mutual National Firemark Award will earn a $10,000 donation to their fire departments and a trip for four to New York.

Firefighter Robert Stewart has been an active member of the Irmo Fire Department for five years. In 2013, Stewart and his team responded to a late night call where they were warned that residents may have still been inside the burning apartment complex. While searching inside extreme heat and zero-visibility smoke, the firefighters, including Stewart, were suddenly engulfed in flames and needed to evacuate immediately. Stewart realized his captain and a fellow firefighter were still inside the building and went back in search of them to help lead them to safety. Stewart credits his department’s training courses for teaching him the techniques that ultimately saved the lives of those firefighters that were trapped inside.
