The Great Irmo Chili Cook-Off was held on Saturday, January 19 in the Irmo Community Park to help raise funds for the National Kidney Foundation.

Visitors sampled bowls of chili prepared by local vendors along with Mac’s on Main Wold Famous Peach Cobbler.

Organizer and Town Councilman Barry Walker gave proceeds from the event to the National Kidney Foundation by offering them a check for five hundred dollars.

“As a renal patient I didn’t have the resources or the funds to combat this disease,” said Walker. “The Kidney Foundation came to my aid and this was a way to pay it forward.”

John Tjaarda, Commuity Outreach Manager for the National Kidney Foundation accepted the $500 check from Councilman Walker and had attended the event. “The chilis were delicious and the donation will go a long way,” said Tjaarda. “This disease is prevalent and these monies go to kidney screening.”

Councilman Walker plans on making this a yearly event for the Town of Irmo.
