Mrs. Elizabeth “Betty” Edwards Harrelson, 80, widow of James Frank Harrelson, passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2017, after an extended illness.
She was born October 16, 1936 in Marion County and was the daughter of the late David Allen Edwards and Wessie Watson Edwards. She was a loving and giving Christian who spent her lifetime helping others. Mrs. Harrelson was a member of the Marion High School Marching Band and Color Guard. She was a dedicated homemaker for many years, later becoming devoted to a teaching career with pre-school, kindergarten, and young adults. For many years she worked with deaf and blind children as a teacher and volunteer in Fayetteville NC. For many years she was an active member of the Lady Lions Organization. MW and WMU. Mrs. Harrelson was a former member of First United Methodist Church, Marion and UMW, and Snyder Memorial Baptist Church and WMU. Most recently she lived with her daughter in Columbia, where she was a member of Union United Methodist Church.
She is survived by 3 children, Chris Harrelson (Nancy) of Atlanta, GA, Phyllis H. (John) Griggs of Columbia, and Charles Wesley “Chuck” (Lori) Harrelson of Raleigh, NC,; 2 sisters-in-law: Doris Ann McMillian and Evelyn Smith, both of Mullins. 10 grandchildren: David Griggs, Sarahanne Murray, Elizabeth Gasser, Hunter and Caitlin Harrelson, Lindsay H. Recktenwald and Ryann Harrelson; Jacob Edwards, Kayla E. Staton and David Edwards. 5 Great grandchildren: William Ewing, John David Griggs IV, Ella Gasser, Alexander Gasser, Wyatt Recktenwald, Mary Kathryn Gasser, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is pre-deceased by brothers, David and Wade Edwards, and sisters, Margaret and Annie Massey Edwards.
Memorial services for Mrs. Harrelson will be March 4 at 2 in the chapel of First United Methodist Church, Marion, followed by a gathering at Spring Branch Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
