Dutch Fork, Irmo and Chapin each won its varsity football region game last week, leaving two of them perfect in conference play early in the schedule and improving the standing of the other.

DUTCH FORK

The Silver Foxes notched their second Region 5-5A victory last week with the 58-0 lopsided win against Blythewood, outscoring their opponent by a wider margin than they recorded in the first lopsided conference victory; 49-9 over River Bluff. Dutch Fork (4-1, 2-0) is now one of two undefeated teams in region competition; Spring Valley (6-0, 2-0) is the other.

This week’s region game could be a challenge when Lexington visits Silver Fox Stadium carrying a 5-2, 2-1 record having developed a habit of outscoring many of their opponents by a significant margin. The Wildcats have lost to only North Augusta (6-0, 0-0) and Spring Valley. They defeated River Bluff last week 41-19 to follow the 41-21 win against Irmo the previous week.

Lexington packs a punch this year, but the Silver Foxes are in championship form and should be favored to remain undefeated after this week’s contest.

IRMO

The Yellow Jackets (5-2, 1-2) got back on track last week with the 33-20 Region 5-5A win against White Knoll, making it the first conference win thus far. That follows the region losses to Blythewood and Lexington and could be a confidence boost for Irmo as the Jackets head into this week’s contest with the undefeated Spring Valley Vikings.

The Vikings should be favored to win this one, but Irmo has a lot of better developed talent this year, and the Yellow Jackets could be the team to ruin Spring Valley’s perfect record.

CHAPIN

The Eagles opened Region 5-4A with a 30-7 win over Dreher last week and now stands as a rock solid competitor in Class 4A and in the region. After the recent back-to-back losses to Irmo and Newberry, Chapin won an important — and tough — matchup at Brookland-Cayce, followed by last week’s win against the only other conference team with only two overall losses going into last week’s region start.

Chapin (4-2, 1-0) is now the only Region 5-4A with just two overall losses, and one of only two with 1-0 region records. Orangeburg-Wilkinson (3-3, 1-0) is the other.

This week the Eagles will play host to A. C. Flora this week in Game Two of the region schedule. The Falcons (0-6, 0-1) are coming off of a 49-28 loss in last week’s region opener against the OW Bruins, and — if the Eagles continue their recent level of play — should still be looking for their first win of the season after Friday’s contest.
