The Parenting Center at Irmo High school received a diaper donation from the Irmo Optimist Club.

The club members lead by Stuart Stout dropped off 5000 diapers August 24. The diapers will be given to families in need in School District Five and also to those participating in the Ready by Five program.

“We are so grateful to the Irmo Optimist Club and organizations that help support programs for families in need,” said Jennifer Felkel, parenting and social work coordinator for School District Five.

The Optimist Club raised $48,000 last year through fundraising projects and make it their mission to put that money to good use.

“We want to do everything we can to help our children in the community,” Stout said. “Abby’s Angels and Ready by Five might be two of the lesser publicized parts of what’s going in the community…Our mission is to have a good time and to give back to the community by being a friend to youth and to reach out and help.”

The diapers will be housed in the Abby’s Angels Closet at the Parenting Center. Abby’s Angels was established in 2009 honoring the life of Abby Makenzie Altman who passed away in February 2009 at the age of 13 months.

“Friends of her family came together to collect new and gently used children’s clothing, baby items, diapers and wipes to be distributed to families in need,” said Vickie Roberts, Family Educator for School District Five’s Ready by Five Program. “They decided to partner with School District Five for distribution of the items through the Ready by Five program and district wide to families in need.”

The Ready by Five program provides education and support to families with children prenatal to kindergarten. The goal is to prepare parents to be their children’s best and most important teacher while equipping them for school entry and lifelong success.

“Without donations like this from groups like the Optimist Club, we couldn’t do what we do with our families and we wouldn’t be able to provide help to families,” Roberts said.

The Ready by Five program is appreciative of all donations. They need gently used children’s clothing for infants through age five. Diapers, wipes and baby equipment is also welcomed.
