Lexington-Richland School District Five held its eighth annual D5 Dance Day at Dutch Fork High School March 16. The day allows dance programs and teams from around the district to showcase their talents and receive instruction from community dance professionals. Dance students were represented from Chapin High, Dutch Fork High, Irmo High, Spring Hill High, Chapin Middle, Dutch Fork Middle, Irmo Middle and Chapin Intermediate School.
“Today is a day about all of us coming together and representing District Five,” said Dutch Fork High dance instructor Ginny Haynes. “This is such a great opportunity for our students to learn from each other and from community leaders that come in and teach and educate them to progress in their growth of dance. It is also a way for our students to experience the different styles with their teachers so there is a common bond with our district.”
Haynes says the day has grown over the years. What originally started as a concert where there were more performers than spectators has grown into a district-wide event that has culminated in giving back to the community. After a full day of learning from professionals, each school performed their own acts at a benefit concert. Admission to the concert was canned goods that would be donated to Harvest Hope Food Bank.
Senior dancer Anyah Barber has been a part of D5 Dance Day each of her four years in high school and says she has gained so much from the opportunity to learn from others.
“I have seen myself grow over the four years I have attended Dance Day,” Barber said. “We don’t always have the opportunity to learn from these professionals in their different genres so just being able to gain this experience has helped me so much.”
“This is such a proud moment for our district and for our students,” Haynes said. “These students are here because they love to dance. As a teacher, I don’t want them to just learn from me. I want them to see from others what dance is like because it reaches far more than just what I can give them. This is a humbling moment for me.”
