Chapin’s defending Class AAA state champion varsity soccer teams have started the 2016-17 spring sports season in ways that could create problems for opponents again this year.

With the Eagles now playing in Class AAAA competition, the girls and boys teams have posted victories in preseason tournaments and started the regular season in the same manner.

The girls team completed the annual preseason Viking Cup Girls Soccer Tournament at Spring Valley High School 3-1, losing only to J. L. Mann in the semifinal round.

Chapin shut out Dorman 1-0 in the opening round, followed that with a 3-1 victory over White Knoll, and then beat Wade Hampton 2-1 before taking a 1-0 loss to J. L. Mann in the semifinals. JLM went on to win the tournament championship game against Fort Mill.

The Lady Eagles then started the regular season last Thursday with a 4-1 loss at Clover, and then followed that with a 3-1 win against South Aiken in the first home game of the regular season early this week.

Chapin’s girls will play again this week when they visit Dutch Fork on Thursday at 7 pm, and then they will kick off next week at Dreher at 5:30 pm Tuesday.

The boys team went 3-1 in last week’s preseason Capital City Cup soccer tournament, losing only to Mauldin 2-1 in the tournament semifinals. The upstate Mavericks then fell to nearby River Bluff in the tournament finals game on Sunday.

Chapin shut out Heathwood Hall Episcopal School 4-0 in Round One, then shut out Wren 5-0 in the second round, and followed that with another shutout — 6-0 over St. Joseph’s Catholic School — before taking the loss to Mauldin in Sunday’s semifinal round.

And now, the Eagles have started the regular season in similar fashion; three straight shutouts. They kicked it off with an 8-0 victory over Richland Northeast early last week, followed that with a 7-0 win against Airport to finish the week, and then started this week with a 2-0 victory at South Aiken.

With six shutouts and one loss now recorded, the Eagles have no game late this week, but will be on the field again Tuesday, next week, when they visit Dreher for their first Region 5-4A game, and they follow that with another region contest when they play at A. C. Flora on Friday. Game times are set for 7:30 pm.
