After the past week’s wins and losses, area varsity basketball teams jockey for position in their region rankings.
The Irmo boys (13-9, 3-3) are at No. 4 in Region 4-5A after a commanding 53-36 victory over No. 1 Spring Valley last Friday and a 56-45 loss against No. 2 Blythewood (16-6, 3-2) on Tuesday, this week,
At the same time, Irmo’s varsity girls (12-10, 2-4) lost 64-42 to the region’s top Lady Vikings and then defeated the Lady Bengals (No. 3) 51-26 to also sit at No. 4 in the region standings.
Irmo has two region games left to play along with a non-region rematch with Dutch Fork. The Yellow Jackets will play at No. 5 Lugoff-Elgin on Friday at 6 and 7:30 pm, and then play host to the Silver Foxes Tuesday, next week.
Dutch Fork and Chapin both compete in Region 5-5A. The Silver Foxes are currently No. 2 at 13-7, 4-2 on the boys side – just behind Lexington (23-0, 5-0) – while the varsity girls are No. 1 in the region at 12-6, 6-0, just ahead of Lexington at 17-4, 4-1.
Dutch Fork’s girls and boys varsity teams earned back-to-back wins in the past week of games (versus Chapin and River Bluff), and that gives each of them a three game winning streak as they prepare for Friday’s matchup with Lexington at home at 6 and 7:30 pm.
After the game at Irmo Tuesday next week the Silver Foxes will have just one more game to go; a Region 5-5A contest at White Knoll on February 8.
Chapin’s boys are in a two-way tie with White Knoll for fourth and fifth place at 1-5 in Region 5-5A competition, while the Lady Eagles were at No. 4 in the region at 1-3 before Tuesday’s game at No. 3 White Knoll (2-3), with River Bluff at 0-5.
After Wednesday’s non-region game against Pelion, Chapin will play the final two region games of the season at home: River Bluff on Friday and Lexington on Tuesday, next week.
